12 September 2026 — OpenAI will not go public this year, CEO Sam Altman told Fortune editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell, delaying what would have been one of the largest listings in market history. "Given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don't feel pressure on that," he said. Pressed on whether the IPO moves to 2027, he would only rule out this year: "I would say not 2026. We got a lot of stuff to do" — citing safety and alignment work and the question of how industry and governments cooperate.
